PPFF #47: peace

Good morning,

I’m sure you’ve all wondered about ☮, a well known symbol for peace and its origin.
It was first designed for the British nuclear disarmament movement in 1958 by Gerald Holtom.

The symbol is a combination of the semaphore (telegraphy using hands or flags) signals for the letters “N” and “D,” standing for “Nuclear Disarmament”
In semaphore the letter “N” is formed by a person holding two flags like “/\” while the letter “D” is formed by holding one flag pointed straight up and the other pointed straight down like “ | ” . Superimposing these two signs forms the shape of the centre of the peace symbol. See the attached diagrams.
